About Salem, VA

Salem was the home of the Native American tribe Totero as early as 8000 B.C. Originally, the European explorers who settled in Jamestown named the village Totero Town. It wasn't until 64 years later in 1802 after the explorers established Jamestown and expanded their reach did they decide to rename the town to Salem. Researchers presume that the town was named Salem after one of its esteemed citizens. Located on the Great Wilderness Road, Salem became a bustling city as travelers passed through on their journey westward. In much later years, Salem was the site of two Union attacks that damaged infrastructure and industry during the Civil War. Salem's militia -- known as the Salem Flying Artillery -- claimed the last confederate shot fired in the war before Robert E. Lee surrendered in nearby Appomattox Court House in Appomattox, VA. Since then, the city has become an independent city in the U.S. Commonwealth of Virginia. It is also known as Virginia's Championship City and has a large investment in athletics -- hosting several statewide, regional and national sporting events.
