About Christiansburg, VA
Christiansburg, VA, was named for Col. William Christian, renowned for his bravery and leadership in several battles with Native Americans, and incorporated in 1792. Before its incorporation, pioneers Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone both called Christiansburg home for a time. In fact, a warrant for Boone's arrest for non-payment of monies he borrowed for supplies is still on record at the Montgomery County Courthouse. Other famous residents include explorer William Clark (of Lewis and Clark fame) and Booker T. Washington, who served as principal of Christiansburg Institute, one of the largest black high schools in southwest Virginia at the time.
Christiansburg was also the site of the first duel with rifles known to have taken place in Virginia. The 1808 duel between Thomas Lewis and John McHenry resulted in the death of both men. It also led to the passage less than two years later of the Barbour Bill, which outlawed dueling in Virginia. Thankfully, things are a lot quieter nowadays in Christiansburg, as evinced by the town's motto, "Progressive Small Town Living at its Best." Among Christiansburg's attractions is the Starlite Drive-In, one of the few surviving drive-in theaters in the state. |
