MAZDA Recall Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Mazda recall service consultation and vehicle inspection.

A Mazda recall can surface a few different ways: a letter in the mail, a search you ran out of curiosity, or a service advisor who flagged something the last time you brought your vehicle in. At Berglund Mazda, we can check your vehicle's status directly and handle any open recall work from there. Here's exactly how the process works.

How Do You Check If Your Vehicle Has an Open Recall?

When a recall is issued, a notice will be sent to you in the mail, but you can look up open recalls on your own as well. First, you'll want to find your vehicle's VIN, a 17-character code that is typically on your driver's side dashboard, visible through the windshield, on the door jamb, or on your registration and insurance documents. Take that number and enter it on the NHSTA website or using our Mazda Recall Info tool, and you'll be able to see if you have any open recalls.

What Triggers a MAZDA Recall?

A recall is issued when a proven safety defect is identified or when a vehicle fails to meet federal motor vehicle safety standards. Once Mazda identifies the issue, federal law requires the company to report it to NHTSA within five business days. After the recall is filed, owners must be notified by mail within 60 days. In 2025, for example, Mazda recalled more than 171,000 Mazda3 and Mazda CX-30 vehicles over a faulty airbag sensor that could prevent airbag deployment under certain conditions. Recalls are fairly common, and are usually easy fixes, but ignoring a recall can impair your vehicle's safety.

Do You Have to Pay for a Recall Repair?

Federal law requires all safety recall repairs to be covered in full, including parts and labor. This applies whether you bought the vehicle new or if it's a pre-owned Mazda model, and there's no expiration on free repairs. Open recalls don't close until the work is done. Bring your vehicle to our authorized Mazda dealer and the repair will be completed with manufacturer-approved parts and procedures.
